In collaboration with La Fe Preparatory 5th graders and Robert Ardovino, we will be harvesting the tilapia and making fresh fish tacos for tasting on the opening night, January 26th 5-7 pm.

To harvest or not

We had a vote to see if we should harvest the fish or not. Half of us wanted to and the other half did not.

“I voted no because los quiero mucho y convivi mucho con ellos y les di de comer. El proyecto fue interesante porque checeamos los niveles del agua.” -Perla Rivera, 5th grade.

“Yo votè sí para saber como saben y tambien para tener la experiencia de comerlos. Me gusto mucho investigar los peces. Aprendí cuidar los bien. Tambièn me gusto mucho investigar los niveles del agua.” -Cristal Barron, 5th grade.

“I voted no because I like the fish and I cleaned the tank. I checked the water levels and I’m going to miss them.” -Mariely Zaragoza, 5th grade.

“Yo vote sí, porque debe ser una buena experiencia de comer pescado así. Y tuve muchas oportunidades de alimentarlos y conocerlos bien.” -Kevin Rivera

Climbing Nitrates

“We measured the water levels every day and at first the nitrate levels were at 5.0 ppm and 10 ppm which means that the microorganisms are converting the ammonia and nitrites into nitrogen which the plants can use as fertilizer. But later we saw that the nitrates kept increasing until it was well past 160 ppm. This means the system is out of balance. So I think we could try to clean the system to get rid of some of the extra microorganisms. Or we can add more plants to the system to use up the extra nitrogen.” -Naolín Salas, Grade 5.

Fish Eggs

“Last week we were cleaning the ft and while we we returning the water back to the filter, we saw a little ball and we took our PE teacher and he said it is a fish egg. Coach Ricky put it back in the water. We are trying to see if any female fish are holding eggs in their mouths.” -Frances Rangel, 5th grade.

Feeding the Fish

“I learned a lot about aquaponics. Let me tell you about feeding the fish. When you feed the fish don’t give them too much food because it could make them sick. Another thing, if you see that one of the fish is not moving or is floating that is because they are dead. Luckily we did a great job of taking care of the fish and none of them died.” -Vanessa Giròn, 5th grade.
